Capitol Hill Briefing:
"Bridging Differences: What Works in Schools"
The ultimate purpose of learning is to teach children how to use their minds well. There are public schools across the country that are effective at helping students to develop fully their capacity to learn and think critically. What are the federal policies and pedagogical approaches that best support these schools? Which policy assumptions undermine effective learning in our schools? How can the re-authorization of ESEA rise above No Child Left Behind's focus on preparing students for standardized test? This session explores how federal policies can help or hinder the development of public schools that best prepare students for work, college, citizenship, and life.

Capitol Hill Briefing:
"Investing in a Culture of Learning"
The ultimate purpose of learning is to teach children how to use their minds well. There are schools across the country that are effective at helping students to develop fully their capacity to learn and think critically. How have these schools fared in the No Child Left Behind era? How do teachers and principals in these schools manage federal policy requirements while doing much more than preparing students for standardized tests? How do students juggle competing demands while developing their minds? This session explores what it is like to teach, learn, and lead in a robust educational environment and examines how federal policies can best support a culture of real learning.
